Medan's transport mix is built around three practical choices: ride-hailing apps (Grab and Gojek dominate), metered taxis, and the city's distinctive angkot minivans that run fixed routes for pocket-change fares. For most trips, GrabBike is the sweet spot, faster than sitting in traffic and cheaper than four wheels. The angkots are an experience: flag them down anywhere along their route, squeeze in, and pay the driver directly when you hop off. They're dirt-cheap but require knowing your destination in Bahasa. Most tourists skip them unless traveling with locals. From Kualanamu Airport, the train to city center is your reliable first move, frequent service throughout the day and a fraction of taxi cost. Skip the touts inside arrivals. The official rail desk is clearly marked. If you're landing very late when trains thin out, use GrabCar from the designated pickup zone, it's typically half what airport taxis quote. One trap to avoid: unlicensed drivers who approach inside baggage claim; they're banned for good reason.
