Helpful Tips
Download the Grab or Gojek app before arrival for easy and reliable ride-hailing across the city.
For travel between Kuala Namu International Airport and the city center, the Damri airport bus has a budget-friendly alternative to taxis.
Use a 'Becak' (motorized rickshaw) for short trips within neighborhoods. But always agree on the fare before starting the journey.
When using local 'Sudako' minibuses, tell the conductor your destination as they often do not follow fixed published routes.
Common Scams to Avoid
At Medan's Kualanamu Airport, some unofficial 'porters' or 'helpers' may aggressively take luggage without consent and then demand a high, non-negotiable fee. To avoid this, firmly decline unsolicited help and only use official airport porters with clear identification.
Taxi and ride-hailing scams involve drivers insisting on a fixed, inflated price instead of using the meter, a tactic common in many tourist destinations. Always insist on using the meter or agree on a fare before entering the vehicle. Using a verified ride-hailing app booked at the official airport pickup zone is often more reliable.
A currency exchange scam involves offers from unofficial money changers inside or near the terminal with rates that seem favorable but result in shortchanging or receiving counterfeit bills. Only exchange money at authorized bank counters or ATMs within the airport to ensure fair rates and legitimate currency.
