Day Trips from Medan

Day Trips from Medan

The best excursions and trips you can do in a day

Medan is the boisterous capital of North Sumatra, a large city that is the gateway to one of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary natural regions. Within a few hours' drive lie the volcanic shores of Lake Toba — the world's largest volcanic lake — orangutan-filled rainforests, steaming highland tea plantations, and the proud Batak and Karo cultures that have shaped this corner of Indonesia for centuries.

Full-Day Trips

Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.

Lake Toba & Samosir Island

$30-50 car hire; IDR 15,000 ferry

Drive to Parapat on the shore of Lake Toba — the world's largest volcanic lake, formed by a super-eruption 74,000 years ago — then ferry to Samosir Island, a landmass the size of Singapore floating within the caldera, home to traditional Batak villages, stone tombs, and hot springs.

Lake Toba deserves an overnight — the day trip is rushed. If forced to day-trip, leave Medan by 6 AM. Tuk Tuk village on Samosir has the best guesthouses and Batak cultural sites.

Bukit Lawang Orangutan Sanctuary

$20-40 for guide + trek; $25-40 transport

Drive to the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park at Bukit Lawang, where a rehabilitation centre has returned orangutans to the wild. Jungle treks with licensed guides offer close encounters with semi-wild orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, and hornbills in primary rainforest.

Best for: Wildlife ensoiasts, nature photographers, eco-travelers
Hire a licensed guide — it's mandatory and they know where to find orangutans. The 3-4 hour trek is sufficient for a day trip. Wear long sleeves and insect repellent. Leeches are common in wet season.

Berastagi & Karo Highland Villages

$15-25 transport; IDR 20,000 village entry

Drive into the Karo Highlands to the cool hill town of Berastagi, flanked by two active volcanoes (Sinabung and Sibayak), where flower markets, fruit stalls selling passion fruit and marquisa, and traditional Karo Batak longhouses create a highland atmosphere far removed from Medan's heat.

Tangkahan: The Hidden great destination

$15-20 elephant bathing; $30-50 transport

Journey to this remote eco-tourism village deep in the Gunung Leuser National Park buffer zone, where conservation-minded locals offer elephant bathing experiences, jungle trekking, river tubing, and overnight stays in a setting that feels like the end of the world.

The road to Tangkahan is rough and slow — a 4WD vehicle is recommended in wet season. This is remote — bring cash, a headlamp, and insect repellent. An overnight stay is strongly recommended.

Day Trip Tips

Make the most of your excursions.

  • Medan traffic is notoriously bad — allow extra time for all departures and consider leaving very early for day trips
  • The road to Bukit Lawang has improved but Lake Toba and Tangkahan roads remain slow — adjust expectations
  • North Sumatra is predominantly Muslim; dress modestly outside of resort areas
  • Medan is hot and humid year-round — highland trips to Berastagi offer a welcome temperature drop
  • Orangutan encounters at Bukit Lawang are not guaranteed but guides have a high success rate, on the morning trek
  • Cash is essential outside Medan — ATMs are scarce in Bukit Lawang, Tangkahan, and Samosir Island
  • Medan's Kualanamu Airport is 40 km from the city — allow 1-2 hours for the airport transfer depending on traffic
